Today, we answered more questions on the film One Flew Over teh Cuckoo's Nest. We had some technical difficulties so you had to go to the link (see comments: March 22 as the link is there) and viewed it on the laptops. These questions will have to be finished over the holidays as you have to write a unit essay when you come back.

Today, we worked on answering more questions viewing the film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. You answerd up to question 40. Look back at the comments on March 22 if you weren't here as Tyler has stuck on the attachment of a site where you can watch this film in its entirety.

Todya, we started watching One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest in order to answer questions. We got to question 18.

Today, we discussed American counter culture in the 1950s leading up to the making of the novel One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. I then gave out half of the viewing questions for the film for second viewing. Your job this weekend is to finish reading over the questions so you are ready to start answering them on Monday (and answering any you think you can now). If you weren't here, the questions are in your portfolio.

Today, we finished watching One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest and then watched some deleted scenes discussing why they were pulled out. I then gave you some readings to complete tonight (read actively) in preparation of our further discussion tomorrow. If you haven't read the excerpt I gave you last week, ensure this is also done for tomorrow. If you were not here, these are in your portfolio.

Today, we watched the first part of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. If youw ere not here, you will have to rent this from the movie store. I only have one copy (my own personal copy - not the school's) and cannot risk it being damaged during the unit. If you cannot rent it, I will be here after school and we can set it up for you to watch then.

Today, you watched a video on the making of One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest as well as scenes from the movie that were never used, but will help you make sense of the reading you were given yesterday. We also discussed what a lobotomy was and saw some videos (UTube).

Monday, March 19, 2012
Today, I did an introduction on author Ken Kesey (he wrote One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest). I also gave you a handout on how to view a film. I then gave you a reading from the novel itself to introduce the characters so you will have some idea of context before you view the film. We will begin watching it tomorrow. If you were not here, these notes are in your portfolio. You will have to catchup on your own.

Thursday, March 15, 2012
Today, we finished our notes on film sounds, editing, and viewing. I also handed out a sheet on common meanings of symbols (yes, it is arguable... water can be a life force or one that could drown a person!). On Monday, we will talk about how to view a film, look at the context of the film you will be viewing and prepare for Tuesday when, hopefully, we will get to take the film through first viewing.

Today, we discussed focus, angles and lighting as part of our film study unit. If you were not here, you will need to fill in the definitions sheet you were given yesterday. I would talk to a classmate and see what they came up with, going on line for more of an explanation if they weren't able to answer all your queries.

Tuesday, March 13, 2012
Today, we started our film study unit. We discussed types of shots and angles in-depth. I did hand out a sheet for note-taking, but if you weren't here, you will need to look up the definitions on your own.

Monday, March 12, 2012
Today, we discussed the essay you wrote last week (some haven't written it so this was a pretty surface discussion). I then discussed the most prominent writing error present: possessive usage. From here, we did some exercises to reinforce what we reviewed.

Friday, March 9, 2012
Today, you wrote your Unit exam on short stories. This was a multiple choice, reading comprehension exam. When you were finished, you were to read your independent novel.
Wednesday, March 7, 2012
Today, we discussed more on the essay writing you will do tomorrow. I handed out a sheet on the essay layout, we discussed active/passive sentences, and I explained that the thesis should be succinct, to the point and active in its phrasing. Tomorrow you will write an in-class essay and on Friday, you will write your unit exam.

Tuesday, March 6, 2012
Today we discussed "Outside Edges" and "Rocking-Horse Winner" as well as some discussion on the commonalities of themes between the three. We also started discussing "The Last Lesson" but didn't complete this activity. Be sure your answers (group or individual) are handed in so I can credit you for the work.

Monday, March 5, 2012
Today, we went over some of the writing areas of concern I am seeing. Tomorrow and Wednesday, we will discuss the short stories we have read in this unit as well as essay writing, then you will write your in-class essay on Thursday. On Friday, you will write your unit exam (Multiple choice: comprehension).
Essay Concerns
· Titles must be about the topic NOT the story.
o “The Little Business Man” Essay (WRONG)
o The Importance of Quick Thinking (RIGHT)
· The introductory paragraph must have an attention getter about topic NOT story.
· The paper MUST BE double-spaced!
· Papers MUST Be written on one side only
· Must be written in dark blue or black ink (NOT PENCIL!)
· Indent new paragraphs, except the first one
· Make sure you put quotation marks around every reference to the short story
· When you use a name (ie: Sam Carter), Use the full name on first reference, then only the last name thereafter (except if mentioned in the conclusion).
· When writing out numbers, they are to be spelled out up to and including ninety-nine.
o Eg: Luke, a 12-year- old boy (WRONG)
o Luke, a twelve-year-old boy (CORRECT)
· Avoid using “You” in an essay!!!!!!!! (it can turn the reader off if not used correctly).
· …Change the "you" to "one" or use "him/he or her/she" to vary the pronouns. Or, if personal, use “I” (see Fit to Print Pages 188-189 & 199-202)
· Be sure to refer to the pronoun of a person as “who” not “that” or “which”
· An exclamation mark is for an extreme emotion (excitement!!!!). Avoid using it in an essay because, well, most of what you have to say is NOT that exciting (yes, I jest… sort of).
· Do not use “In my opinion”, or “I believe” in your essay. You can cut these words out and the sentence will still work.
o Eg: In my opinion, homework should be outlawed. (WRONG)
o Homework should be outlawed. (CORRECT)
· We need to work on capitals and comma usage
